The idea behind Red Hot: produce really cool CDs, and donate the profits-- a cool seven million so far, it's said-- to AIDS relief. The idea behind the
11th Red Hot CD, Onda Sontora: Red Hot--
Lisbon: explore the music of the Portuguese diaspora. "Diaspora" is a gentle way of referring to the process by which
Portuguese adventurers spread out around the globe and conquered for Lisbon an overseas empire-- Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Goa, Guiné Bissau, and
Mozambique, among others. But this CD shows that the Portuguese have conquered hearts too, since David Byrne and K.D. Lang are among the 40 artists from 11 countries
singing in seven languages who offer up tunes in a Portuguese vein. The result is a superb compilation, "the best world music album of the year," sayeth the
New York Times. "In the wake of the enormous destruction that resulted from European domination of foreign lands there emerged an inadvertent artistic legacy of amazing beauty,"
says Red Hot's founder, John Carlin. "It is fitting that such a project should be an AIDS awareness and fund-raising effort. Like many epidemics before it, AIDS has
also spread along major trade and travel routes."
Onda Sonora (Portuguese for "sound wave") resonates at your local record store.
