September 2007 Letters

Remembers Wild West

I enjoyed reading "He Pulled Out His Prick and Slapped Me with It" [July 2007's "Sex Histories," available at Guidemag.com].

I used to live in Colorado also, and loved the reference to the ballpark in Denver. Still think about the bath house with its three floors-- and that tractor trailer truck cab down in the basement! Anyone else remember those wild times in Denver?

Devoured June Issue

I appreciated you stance against hate-crime laws [in "Fewer Laws, Not More," the June 2007 editorial, available at Guidemag.com]. The Homosexual Information Center has never supported efforts to get hate-crime laws. As you point out, such laws have unintended consequences that in fact are a danger to efforts to gain equal rights for homosexual citizens.

also thought the review of Jim Sears's book, Behind the Mask of the Mattachine, was good. And thanks for the list of the pride events around the world.

He's 'Writing A Book'

Please get this letter to the gentleman pictured in [the coverage of a Boston area bar]. "Sir: Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words. Sometimes it evokes the question, 'what was the person thinking?' I am presently writing a book on that subject, and it would be excellent to converse with you over coffee or a drink or whatever, at a time and place convenient for you. (I travel a lot, and come to Boston three times a year.) I know you have a creative mind which will make your thoughts most interesting for the book. Sincerely,"

T.G.
Las Vegas, Nevada

Gee, T.G., we had no idea the fellow had an insightful mind; we just thought he had a smokin' hot bod and a killer smile.... Alas, we have no way to deliver reader mail to models -- nor model males to readers!

Editorial Leads to Epiphany

Your editorial "Being Human Means Being Gay" [June 2007, available at Guidemag.com] hit like an epiphany. Your observations about human behavior are hard to argue with. I know from my own experiences as a boy that it was first an interest in "self" that was followed naturally by an interest in the familiar, "like self." I'm pleased to report that in spite of years of struggling to fit the societal role I was conditioned to fill (which included an attempt at a hetero marriage) I am a happily practicing masturbator and partner to a beautiful man. The clear message your editorial provides will go far to promote the understanding that gay is natural and should be embraced as a wonderful facet of human behavior.

Baltimore Baths?

I'm planning to visit Baltimore later this summer, and I was just wondering, are there any sex clubs there? You know like the ones in the "Club" or "Steamworks" series? If not, then what's the closest thing?

Zack
via e-mail

Alas, bathhouses don't seem to be one of the Charm City's charms. Check out our January '07 article, "Baltimore Revisited: You Can't Go Home Again" [available at Guidemag.com] for a review of the city's recent gay history.

Mailroom Censors

I just transferred to another [prison] facility. The warden here won't allow me to receive The Guide, although hetero inmates may receive FHM, Stuff, and Maxim. It's discriminatory! Is there an advocate who could help me receive The Guide?

Eric
Columbus, Georgia

We've filed complaints about non-delivery with Departments of Corrections in three states, and all have rejected our appeals. Kentucky actually has a check box on their mailroom form to reject any material that "promotes homosexuality"! We're glad they recognize our mission, but find it laughable that a prison is worried about "promoting" homosexuality.

Maybe a Georgia reader/lawyer will be in touch about your case; if so, we'll place you in contact with each other.
