Provincetown-- If the ocean rather than the range is more your idea of home,
then do good by getting wet, and join the 17th annual Swim for Life. Even if you're you
among those for whom the prospect of a 1.4-mile-long ocean swim brings on involuntary
visions
of saltwater-logged, seaweed-strewn corpses that could have jumped from the pages of Edward
Gorey (until his untimely death, a long-time Provincetown resident), you needn't feel
excluded from the Swim for Life; organizers have, thoughtfully, provided a special event
just for
you: the "Paddler Flotilla," wherein persons with a kayak, canoe, or row boat
between them and Davy Jones can join the "swim." Those for whom any ocean-going
excursion is too daunting can partake of a "Pool Splash Party," wherein you
complete your 1.4 miles with laps in a kiddie
pool too shallow for drowning.
But whether you swim, paddle, or lap, you can help the Swim for Life raise funds
for good causes around town, from AIDS to Z. More than that, the swim generates good karma.
"The generosity of this event replenishes our community and reminds us of our common
bond
to each other and to the sea," declares organizer Jay Critchley. "Thank you all
for your continued presence." You'd be hard-pressed to hear such dulcet
Californiaspeak east of Sausalito. The big day is, ahem, September 11th. Registration
starts at 9:30am on the deck of the
Boatslip Beach Club (161 Commercial Street). Swimmers will be transported (literally, not
spiritually) to Long Point at 10:30am, and swim back to the Boatslip. Browse to
www.swim4life.org or call 508-487-1930 or e-mail thecompact@comcast.net.
