Ben Black sings standards
Queer & There continues its gay romp through
The Guide in-box of CD's with Ben Black and his
Remembered Faces/Private Places, in which this artful high-tenor works his way through
some American standards, along with songs in Spanish, Japanese, and Portuguese, all with a jazzy piano, bass, and drum backup. There's something affectingly unaffected about how Ben
Black sings not only with sensitivity and poise, but a sort of sweet earnestness besides. This makes even his rendition of "Danny Boy" in danger falling into cliché a good listen. A voice has
a capacity to convey a whole ethos: Edith Piaf summoned up hard-scrabble, high-tensile strength Gallic femininity; Pavorotti, Italianate passion. Ben Black is openly gay, and a good thing
too, for his voice conveys a quiet, confident, comfortable turn-of-the-millennium American gay man. Listen for yourself at www.benblack.net.
