October 2005 Letters

Going Backwards?

Way back in the repressive '50s, girl-on-boy (or boys), and adult-male cruisers of boys were weekend activities recounted in the locker room and classes of our middle class, suburban high school. Both active participants, and all-ears voyeurs, thought these activities were relatively private, thrilling, and fulfilling forbidden acts. Our only worry was getting caught and reported to our parents. We never thought of this recreational sex as criminal acts. As far as I know everyone went on to be a good citizen. If any harm came about, it was due to the Catholic and other churches, together with some parents and others, telling impressionable teens that sex was dirty and we would go to hell if we indulged.

Of course nothing much was taught about human sexuality, although I do recall our male biology teacher telling us that he was sorry that he could not show us a real animal penis he had preserved, because "some people won't let me show you boys that!" His disgusted look was enough to make us resent those people who were deciding what we could learn and how. Instead, I and most others of that time, learned about sex from the street, our friends, and maybe some soft or hard porn. Not good, but at least we did not end up in jail. Also no girl in my class became pregnant, there were no reported rapes, and sexual predators were not part of our community. What many of us later viewed as puritanical times, were more liberal than now.

Why No Greece?

I am just curious why I am unable to find a gay travel review in your complete listings of past reviews for places such as Rome, Italy or Athens/Mykonos, Greece. You seem to have most other European destinations so it seemed odd that you had not reviewed Italy or Greece. If there is a review that I could find in some other area of your website that I am unaware of for these destinations, could you please advise me and thanks.

Thanks for the suggestion; we'll be looking into possible new European destinations for next year.

On-line Maps

I was wondering if I could find the city maps of gay saunas and hotels on line anywhere on-line?
