Of gay men and departed mothers
An anthology of essays in which authors expatiate "on the bond between gay men and their mothers, and the effects that linger following death" runs risks of sinking into maudlin swamps, if not beforehand crashing fatally into the creepy. So Alexander Renault, proprietor of
Renault Publishing, has some guidance for those submitting writings to the volume he's editing,
Walking Higher: Gay Men Write About the Deaths of Their
Mothers.
"We do not seek essays that corroborate the stereotypical mother/gay son relationship," he advises. "Accepted essays will be highly personal, yet not overly sentimental. Essays should contain some surprising points of view, and will seek to ask more questions than
answer them. We are more interested in honesty than producing a 'politically correct' collection," Renault adds, though it is hard to conceive what would be the demands of political correctness on such a topic, other than not broaching it at all.
"We hope to show a complexity of relationships with a broad emotional range," Renault goes on. "Essays should provide a wide range of analysis as well as tributes and eulogies. All essays should be written from the gay male perspective." Upon publication, authors get
US$75 for their musings, which should be between 1500 and 8000 words. In case your mom is still with us, don't rush to put your pen away the submissions deadline isn't till March 1, 2004. For more info, write Renault Publishing, PO Box 70, Bellefonte, Pennsylvania 16823 or
