This pleasant surprise from John Travis explores the rules of at traction between late-'50s preppies and greasers. One of the rare gay videos that shows insight into the eroticism of class, Tailspin has more narrative coherence and believability than most story-driven porn productions.

Jeff White, a delicate blond with the perfectly drawn blunt-featured profile of a character in "Terry and the Pirates," plays a spoiled but vulnerable college-bound rich kid who is learning to deal with his inner slut. As if to underscore his upper-middle-class cluelessness, White's character drives a gleaming scarlet Edsel. Ethan Marc, as White's secret sex buddy from the other side of the tracks, drives a battered blue Mercury. They usually have sex behind drawn blinds in the back seat of Marc's discreetly parked car, as if to avoid mussing the Edsel. Marc is not very happy about this arrangement. Eventually the two have a remarkable lovemaking session on a blanket in the woods-- while Marc's greaser buddies steal White's car.

The half-dozen sex scenes range from passable to very hot. There are strong encounters between Marc and Brett Winters, who come together after hours in the diner where they work, and White and Jason Nikas, ducking out of a party where Nikas has been dumped by his female date. Most members of the cast can act, and they encompass types ranging from dominant grease monkey Dino DiMarco to bunny-cute waiter Blake Anderson. The period is evoked with care; anachronisms seldom creep in. The plain white briefs these actors wear are a welcome change from the usual cavalcade of designer underpinnings.
