An experimental HIV drug-resistance test developed by Duke University scientists can detect even minute amounts of resistant HIV, according to a study published online in
Nature Methods.
Current assays are able to detect resistant strains only if they represent a significant proportion of the virus circulating in a patient's blood. The Duke test was able to simultaneously analyze many viral genomes and detect
drug-resistant populations that comprised as little as .01 percent of the sample. The test also appeared to be effective even when used for very small blood samples.
