With most gay publications sliced seemingly from the same loaf of fluffy, fiber-free Wonder bread, you have to hand it to
Glance: A Review of Social Trends & Mainstream Arts for Gay
Males. This densely typeset newsletter comes out of a bakery all its own-- one that readers who manage to chew through an
issue may decide only half-cooks its editorial loaves.
"Glance," declares the masthead, "is mainly intended for those who are interested in the issues of western sexual
biases (against gay male sexuality) and American racism against different cultural groups." So far so clear. But here's a typical sentence: "Western women grab onto
Slavic males' sentiments with Irish males, believing Slavic males are just part Irish, and that Irish males' emotions are physical, squirty sentiments, which can be grabbed
onto, uprooted, and ejaculated through lewdness." An issue of
Glance contains thousands of such sentences, all in type the size of poppy seeds. There's a kind of poetry
here, but where's the beef? Decide for yourself, for less than the price of a dozen bagels. A sample issue of this maybe nutty slice of Midwest gay culture sets you back
just three dollars. Write to Glance, PO Box 44093, Indianapolis, Indiana 46244. "All articles are opinion pieces," the editors note, perhaps by way of explanation.
"Their factual accuracy is not of primary concern."
