School for Lovers
By Giacomo Tramontagna

School for Lovers
Rating: 2 Stars
Lucas Kazan Productions. Produced by Lucas Kazan and Ettore Tosi. Directed by Lucas Kazan. Videography by Leonardo Rossi. Edited by Egisto Mastroianni. Music by Andrea Rosselli. Starring Jean Franko, Matthias Vannelli, Karel Rok, Jason, Roberto Giorgio, Samuel Dolce, Martin Dejdar, and Fabinho.
How to order

After a pause, director Lucas Kazan has resumed turning out his patented brand of opera-porn. Usually he borrows plots and scores from minor classics like I pagliacci or Cavalleria rusticana. But in this case he tackles a masterpiece, reimagining Mozart's Cosi fan tutte, ossia La scuola degli amanti as a sexually explicit gay soap. Andrea Rosselli is credited with original music, but the soundtrack is clogged with Mozart excerpts transformed into kitsch.

Like Lorenzo da Ponte's 1790 libretto, School for Lovers hinges on a test of fidelity: Alfonso (Jean Franko) bets Ferrando (Matthias Vannelli) and Guglielmo (Jason), that their respective boyfriends, Dorino (Martin Dejdar) and Fiorino (Karel Rok), will break their vows of fidelity under the right conditions. In the original, Ferrando and Guglielmo disguise themselves as Albanian soldiers and try to seduce each other's lovers, Dorabella and Fiordigli; in this incarnation, seductions are carried out by Alfonso himself, and by an accomplice, Despino (Roberto Giorgio)._

The School for Lovers doesn't provide the good, dirty fun a savvier homo version of Cosi fan tutte might have generated. It's stilted, thin, badly edited, and slightly tedious, even at 83 minutes. But it isn't awful. The cast is at least as consistently scenic as the Italian locations. Although much of the comedy is lost, there are playful touches that work, such as Alfonso's use of his cell-phone's picture-taking capabilities to document his successful seduction of Dorino.

The four principal sex scenes serve up occasional tasty images, especially when fur-faced Jean Franko-- who looks ready to haul his sexual plunder off to a cave-- spanks Martin Dejdar's tongue with his paleolithic-looking dick, and when Roberto Giorgio and Karel Rok stand opposite each other naked, smiling, as their erections converge and collide.
