Gay Pride World Wide
Out and about around the world

As the exhaustive list here proves, gay pride marches are sprinkled around the world like fairy-dust. Or, more cynically, like branches of McDonald's or Citibank. It's no accident that the scatter of parades--from Guadalajara to Warsaw (now administering its very own chunk of Iraq)--is a map of American cultural influence. This season's marches commemorate, after all, the 34th anniversary of a riot that broke out in New York, with the gay movement first really succeeding--like Coca Cola or Levi's--in the punishing American marketplace. Over most of this month's parades, the Rainbow Flag will be standard bearer--a symbol whose universality vies now with the Stars and Stripes. What better time, when the sun sets on neither flag, to chat with gaydom's Betsy Ross?

View our poll archive
America is a young country, but the Queer Nation is even younger, so our Betsy Ross (legendary designer and seamstress of the first American flag) is not a dust-and-bones historical figure, but a living legend.

You can find Gilbert Baker, conceptual artiste and Rainbow Flag auteur, presently in Key West--where he's putting into effect his own vision of the Manifest Destiny: realizing a rainbow banner that spreads from sea to shining sea. In this case, from the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico, or the mile-and-a-quarter length of Duval Street. It's all part of Rainbow 25, an effort to commemorate the flag's 25th anniversary.

Baker, a self-admitted vexillographer or flagophile, says he came up with the idea of the flag in San Francisco in 1978. When he ran it up a flag pole during gay pride, he knew instantly he had struck a chord.

The project exceeded his wildest dreams. "It's phenomenal. It's everywhere. It's literally a worldwide phenomenon," Baker says. You can't copyright a flag, so he doesn't get any royalties from the success of his creation. And unlike the flag of, say, the US, there is no monopolist of destructive power--no government--to prevent people from, say, hanging the flag upside down, rendering the stripes vertical, or, heaven forfend, burning the Rainbow Flag. Diversity breeds diversity, and there's been a tendency for the number of stripes and hues to proliferate. The 5000-pound mega-flag to be unfurled at Key West's gay pride parade on June is an attempt at restoration--it will have only the eight original colors. Baker denies rumors that each of them (fuchsia, red, orange, yellow, green, turquoise, blue, and purple) derive from the hanky code, or stand for a particular homosexual act--or maybe that's just the Absolut Vodka talking (the drinks-maker is footing the bill for all the fabric and publicity). The group's web site (www.rainbow25. org) offers a more anodyne tale of the colors' symbolism (sex, life, healing, sunlight, nature, magic, serenity, and spirit, respectively)--a virtual pantheon of New Age goodness.

But perhaps the Rainbow Flag, like the American one, occupies an uncertain niche. "People are kind of like over the rainbow in America," Baker tells The Guide, "but I tell you, it takes a lot of guts to put a rainbow flag on your house in, say, Ecuador." Is the Stars and Stripes a symbol of freedom? Or of an empire that resorts to shock and awe--that is, terror--when it wants to get its way? Is the gay movement, which now coexists all too comfortably with a vicious sexual hysteria spread throughout the West, crushing the life out of local traditions of homosexuality in the world's Ecuadors and New Guineas? Or is it realizing what can be saved of them?

On Stonewall's 34th anniversary, one recalls what Chairman Mao said of the French Revolution when asked what he thought of it--"It's too early to tell." The possibilities maybe still are as varied as the rainbow hues, sometimes more than eight, that will be fluttering in the wind above this month's gay pride parades.
