Red Center: Sheep Shearers in the City

After Great Aunt Gladys's unfortunate sheep-
dipping accident in the shed," explains stubble-
faced Aussie "Red" Centre, "she left me a whole pile
of the crinkling stuff." Red and his mate Bruce
(Darren Cure), who live on a sheep station deep in
the Western Australian desert, are
using that windfall to finance a sex binge in
cosmopolitan Sydney. On the boardwalk at Bondi
Beach, in Bondi Junction, beside the Sydney Opera
House, in Centennial Park, and along the periphery
of Bronte Beach, they pick up a succession of cute
young blokes and record the results.
Red Center's repetitive format
wears thin before the end of its 140 minutes, but
this good-natured celebration of casual sex
contains some remarkable passages. In all five
sequences, Red and Bruce pass a video camera
back and forth as they collaboratively get it on with
their latest catch. This pseudo-vérité approach was
devised by British director Mike Esser; all the
videography seems to have been the work of the
models. The result spoofs reality TV while giving
viewers an illusion of peeping in on private sex
play. In the best sequence, a slim blond
real estate agent named Sean shows Bruce and Red
a vacant flat in a high-rise overlooking the city.
Their ecstatic three-way takes place in an empty
room with a floor-to-ceiling window at one end and
a floor-to-ceiling mirror at the other.
Some of these models will be familiar to
fans of Aussie-porn. "Bruce" and "Pascal," for
example, both appear in the recent Raging Stallion
import
Young Bucks, where they're respectively
called Damon Bradley and Remy Delaine. Much of
Red Center's success is due to the
eponymous star, who may be the most ingratiating
sexual actor to surface in porn since Jim Buck
(Mardi Gras Cowboy, Dr. Jerkoff and Mr.
Hard). Handsome, dark-haired, brimming with
mischief, he could be the love child of Daniel Day
Lewis and Crocodile Dundee.
