June 1999 Letters

Where is Monda Behinou?

Where in the world is Monda Behinou [see "Monda Behinou: Land of Mud Pits, Onion Fests, and Spy Cams," April 1999]? Is it fictitious city luring us to nowhere? An April Fool? We checked with CIA, U.S. Department of State, United Nations, Switzerland, France, Mac OS 8.5 Sherlock, and with all popular search engines. No results. A ploy with no-man island. Where are the links? Only Jeremy Bentham [whose writings inspired Monda Behinou's city planners] appeared on most of web sites.

Hello there. Just recently purchased you magazine. I have totally immersed myself with your destination of the month-- Monda Behinou. Is this a fictorial place or what? I can't seem to find any information on this destination.

Can you please provide me with some sources as to the actual whereabouts, etc. I would appreciate any information that you can send. Even if it involves telling me that this place is non-existent.

I was reading through the April 1999 Guide and was very interested in the Monda Behinou section. Unfortunately, there is no indication of where this place is. My partner thinks that this article is a fantasy that the author has elaborated into a story. Since we can't find anything about Monda Behinou in any atlas, dictionary, or internet search, we are left quite perplexed. Does this place really exist and if so, where is it?

Before making travel plans, the many readers who contacted us for more information on Monda Behinou might do well to note that our travel correspondent filed his report on April 1st....

Wants More Color

I picked up an issue of The Guide which featured a handsome black man on the cover, but was disappointed to discover that cover was the most colorful thing about the magazine.

The gay community throw around the words discrimination, bigotry, and prejudice, but we are more guilty of those than our straight counterparts; reading papers such as yours you would get the impressions that all gays were 1) white 2) all men 3) who had great bodies, 4) handsome.

Your paper featured a black man on the cover, but besides a couple of interracial couple shots all 148 pages were white men.

I think the gay community needs to clean up it's own house before, trying to get the straight house in order.

Grateful Down Under

Greetings from "Down Under." This is a letter of thanks and congratulations on a great publication! You printed a classified ad for me in your June '98 publication which I was very appreciative of. I was also overwhelmed when I received through the mail a copy of the June edition showing my ad. I have received two responses from the USA and one from Jamaica! I have replied to all. So thanks for a job well done!

From a grateful Aussie fan,

High Praise

I love your magazine and think you have the best web site on gay travel I've ever seen. Please send me your writer's guidelines. Enclosed is my #10 self addressed stamped envelope.

Happy to oblige! Now, get writing!

Needs Subscription in Australia

Congratulations on a great magazine! Ads are so easy to reply too and send. And the world scope is great. One small gripe: it's hard to get the magazine in Melbourne, Australia. Guess I'll just have to subscribe!
