Abbott Laboratories, makers of the protease inhibitor Norvir (Ritonavir), has announced that manufacturing problems will result in a shortage of the drug in capsule form by the end of August. Patients currently using
the Ritonavir capsules will have to switch to the liquid form of the drug, also produced by Abbott.
Abbott reports that some warehoused capsules have crystalized, making the product slow to dissolve. The company says that none of the defective drug has been shipped, and that all capsules received
by patients are "safe and effective."
Until Abbott can work out this manufacturing problem, patients using Ritonavir will be switched to liquid drug; the old version of the liquid drug requires refrigeration (as do the capsules), but a new
liquid formulation does not require refrigeration, so patients are urged to check carefully with their pharmacists. Abbott reports that mixing the liquid drug with chocolate milk or similar drink can help mask the admittedly vile taste.
