After a week of entertaining rush-hour travelers on Santiago's metro subway system, professional stripper Monserrat Morales was arrested by municipal police on July 11. Dubbed La diosa de metro ("Subway Goddess"), Morales, 26, had worked quickly to avoid arrest, managing to doff and don the trenchcoat hiding her very skimpy bikini "uniform" in between subway station stops.
According to Reuters, Morales was not simply a publicity seeker, but rather sought to challenge prudish Chilean society, often noted as one of the most conservative in Latin America.
"This is just a beginning. We are starting an idea here that will grow and be developed further," she told Reuters as police and subway guards surrounded her.
"Chile is still a pretty timid country," Morales's manager Gustavo Pradenas told the press. "People aren't very extroverted and we want to take aim at that and make Chile a happier country."
Morales reports she always sought subway cars carrying only adults for her inspirational gyrations.
