Doggy Style
Rating: 3 Stars

How to order

Released late in 2006 and somehow overlooked by this reviewer, Doggy Style remains in circulation and is worth checking out. Johnny Seltzman's script makes trite metaphorical use of leash issues, but it's competently written and well served by an amiable cast. The story is gently subversive; much of the sex has a pleasing sizzle.

Running late for an important meeting, Shane Collins finds a sick, abandoned dog and takes time out to bring the pooch to a veterinarian. The delay costs him his job. Arriving home early, he finds boyfriend Derek Cruz in bed with muy picante Anthony Martinez. A stickler for fidelity, Collins tosses Cruz out. He's left alone with Boner, the foundling dog, who becomes his ticket to new beaux, first leading him into a flirtation with eminently available fellow dog-walker Brett Matthews. Alas, when Collins stumbles on Matthews orgying in a cruising area, he storms off feeling betrayed. Moving on to Boner's doctor (Travis Carlson), whose palatial digs reflect what vets charge these days, Collins soon finds that his tony new love object, an even bigger stickler for fidelity, is a jealous bore. Lesson learned, he returns to Matthews.

I>Doggy Style benefits from Andrew Rosen's editorial skills and mostly nimble direction. The cruising-area sequence doesn't quite jell, but the three one-on-one sex scenes strike sparks-- especially Collins's pairings with Carlson and Matthews. Jet Set's Shane Collins has a short filmography-- he played a supporting role in Rosen's Going Under and he's in the current Jet Set Direct-- but he's a riveting presence with a well-defined swimmer's build, the clean-cut, unapologetic ingenuousness of a Mousekeeter, and a thick, impudent cock. Cuddling in bed with his Boner, he's cute as a button.
