New York-- Given the penchants of US lawmakers, you'd be forgiven for thinking that the "LIFE Act" stands for something like "Legal Initiative to Force Executions." It doesn't-- the law is about immigration. But a deadline
of a real sort looms April 30th, and if you're in the US illegally and homosexually-persuaded or positively-HIV, that may be the last day to get your affairs in order with US immigration authorities or face the boot. In fact, the
law in question stands for the "Legal Immigration and Family Equity Act," though there's little equitable in it. Nonetheless, explains April Herms of the Lesbian & Gay Immigration Rights Task Force, "under the measure,
certain people who are in the US illegally may be eligible to apply for permanent resident status. Because benefits under the LIFE Act are linked to a specific filing deadline of April 30th, it is strongly recommended that you speak
with an immigration lawyer as soon as possible if you think you might be eligible." Computer-savvy "illegal aliens" (you know who you are!) can learn more by browsing to www.lgirtf.org/act.html. People with gay- and
HIV-related US immigration questions can contact LGIRTF by phone at 212-818-9639, and by email at info@lgirtf.org.
