Indinavir (Crixivan) and ritonavir (Norvir) are potent HIV protease inhibitors. The bioavailability of Indinavir is reduced 80 percent after a regular meal, probably partly due to protracted absorption related
to meals. Thus, Indinavir should be given two hours after or one hour before a regular meal.
Ritonavir inhibits the metabolization of Indinavir. A study of nine healthy volunteers demonstrates that the presence of Ritonavir provides for significantly greater bioavailibility of Indinavir, suggesting that
the combination can be taken with or without food. The combination of these two drugs will be evaluated in HIV-infected patients.
