How to order
This amiable winter romp among the ski slopes and mountain hideaways of Big Bear is the second volume in Chip Daniels's
Hot Cops series, and it's an improvement over the first,
Bustin' Loose. Working in pseudo-documentary style, Daniels directs with a lighter
touch and closer attention to detail. The performances he elicits from a first-rate cast are relaxed, sly, uninhibited and funny. Logan Reed in particular, as L.A.
County Sheriff's Deputy Boyle, has perfected the inflections of a National Park Service Ranger leading a gaggle of tourists through one of the more unthreatening parts of Yosemite.
The deputies assigned to Big Bear Valley are skilled at police-community relations. "People find us very friendly," explains Deputy Quinn (Bo Summers), "and we find the people very friendly." Called to
the assistance of skier John Ross, who has taken a spill, officer Reed helps carry him off the slope, escorts him home, and, in true friendly fashion, stays around to make sure Ross's injuries aren't serious. Reed's
ministrations appear to produce an endorphin rush, since during the freeform acrobatic fucking that follows, Ross is clearly feeling no pain.
Other episodes involve Bo Summers pulling over drunken driver Brian Daniels, and Rod Barry apprehending naked housebreaker Michael Crawford. The finale concerns a successful search by deputies
Mike Nichols and Brett Winters for lost hikers Scott Lyons and Kristian Brooks, whom they find in mid-69 inside a shuttered house. Mountain Patrol contains some tacky sets that look like little-theater evocations of
mountain lodge interiors, but it's well edited and shot, and the sex will warm your extremities.
