In this send-up of TV talent competitions like
American Idol, five Chicago-area porn aspirants vie for a chance to compete in LA.
The perky host is Jason Sechrest, proprietor of a porn-lore website, www.jasoncurious.com.
The judges are Lorenzo Vargas, Alec Powers, and Tag Eriksson;
the contestants are Jason Adonis, Rico Suave, Derec Lang, Ben Campezi, and Ken Scott.
Because one contestant has suddenly dropped out, fearing his grandmother might be watching,
the schedule of pairings in the live-sex event has gone askew, necessitating-- by one of
those
cognitive leaps peculiar to porn-- the participation of the judges.
The five main sex episodes are preceded by a mean-spirited sequence featuring
porn-star candidates who didn't make the final cut. Several of these are at least as hot as
some of the finalists, but as each loser crosses the stage, the judges laugh or look
stricken. "I think
I'm gonna puke," someone says as a guy with a belly appears. When a long-haired dude
named Dave flips the judges a bird, you may hope he winds up in a sex scene, but he
disappears. There seems to be no question of replacing the dropout by tapping into a pool
of discards who
don't quite match American Porn Star's unimaginative gym-clone ideal.
The sex is tame, even when it involves leather paraphernalia or whipped cream, but
it's proficient. For some reason, Vince Taylor has to compete with couples by staging a
solo. The best-matched pair is Tag Eriksson and Ken Scott, but Scott falls out of the
running by
stopping short of a finale. ("I have to
come?" he asks.) In the first and most energetic scene, the heat comes from
sensuous Latin Rico Suave, and from horny Swedish judge Tag Eriksson, who can't resist
joining Suave and his on-stage partner, Jason Adonis-- even though the latter
seems lit from within by a seven-watt bulb. American Porn
Star appears to exist, alas, in order to market Mr. Adonis. This blatantly gay-for-pay
model has a 4H-Club face and a varsity quarterback's physique, but he can barely move on
camera, and he speaks like a cyborg. When he
takes first place, the game seems rigged.
