How to order
In Kristen Bjorn's Man Watcher (1998), Ferenc Botos sneaked about watching men have sex. He finally got caught and drawn into an orgy, and-- once he'd made the leap to
sexual participation-- found true love. In this new erotic gem, Bjorn recycles that scenario with variations. On Bone Island, a fictional Spanish Caribbean paradise, dark-haired, plush-lipped
Ivan Andros spies on handsome, grieving Juan Jimenez's weekly visits to his lover's grave. A dedicated peeping Tom, Andros one-ups Botos by using a camera. His voyeurism doesn't just
reflect the viewer's situation, it mirrors and fetishizes the director's role.
Andros secretly tapes a series of sexual connections, starting with one that occurs when neighboring householder Miguel Leon discovers two brothers, Diego and Guillermo
Pastores, sharing a joint on his porch. In the blistering aftermath, the Pastores boys, who do look fraternal enough to make incest convincing, get passionately involved with each other and with
Leon, who fiercely fucks them in tandem. Later, Andros monitors a couple's entanglement with two cops; he then moves on to a five-way romp inside a walled garden. After this, he follows
Jimenez into a club called Leather Master (which actually exists in Key West), where an eight-man orgy is just warming up. He discreetly tapes the proceedings until
he's spotted and engulfed in the action. Turning the tables, the leathermen use the voyeur's camera to shoot footage of him performing mass fellatio and getting facially festooned with spooge. Eventually, when
Andros has sex with Jimenez, the video camera plays a role in their celebratory encounter.
All five scenes are superbly staged, performed, and shot.
Bone Island doesn't hit as many peaks as
Man Watcher or Isle of Men, however; Bjorn has been obsessively sticking to the
same Floridian-Caribbean-Mexican wonderland lately, and is starting to repeat himself. Maybe he's due for a change. The steam-driven performances of Asian models Sam Sun and Khieu
Samphan in this feature's middle episode suggest that heading East might be a profitable course.
