The experimental cancer drug flavopiridol has been shown to block HIV cells from replicating in cell culture experiments. A report in the
Journal of Biological Chemistry indicated that the drug worked at much
lower concentrations than those being used in cancer trials.
The drug, which acts on an enzyme known as P-TEFb, interferes with the transcription process, ending mutations that are hard to overcome in HIV treatment. The researchers note that if animal studies
support these findings, human tests could begin soon.
