This month, the 33rd anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, we are journeying to faraway URLs to seek out the full variety of gay pride parades around the world­ not just the ones of New York, Montreal, and Sydney that so dominate the global gay events calendar, but their diverse and less heralded cousins in the world's Tacomas, Catanias, and Cedar Rapids. We promise you won't suffer sunburn, bed bugs, or runny bowels. But by the time you've completed your quest, your wrists will be limp, eyes sore­ and there will be tales to tell.

Like how the good lesbian and gay folk of Edmonton, Alberta, start their annual march (June 22nd) from the old home of Queen City Meats, a butcher shop long extinguished from the ranks of Edmonton commerce, but whose salamis evidently cut mustard in the memory of wry homosexuals.

Or how the New Jersey Pride Committee (June 2nd, Asbury Park), in an effort to end butchery of a different sort, has this year upped the ante of inclusivity by adding a smear of "intersex" to the LGBT pride sandwich. If the world sees how proud their owners can become of their neither-fish-nor-fowl genitalia, surgeons presumably will think twice about bringing their fillet knives to bear against hermaphrodites in pursuit of rigidly binary sexual conformity.

Or how about the witty slogan of Bangkok Pride Coalition­ "We Are Mary, We Are One," which could do double duty for both the Bangkok pride march (November 17th) and the Easter procession of the Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Mercy. But wait­ on second look, that's just a funny typeface, probably inspired by Thai script, that the Bangkokers have chosen for their logo­ the slogan is really the anodyne "We Are Many, We Are One."

Indeed, slogans celebrating the unity of diversity and the diversity of unity, like Jesuitical disquisitions on the trinity of God's oneness, pour forth with slightly eerie sameness from the web pages of pride organizing committees from Cologne to Tijuana.

"Embrace Diversity" is the 2002 motto for Pride Fest in Harrisburg, a fair epitome. "The 12th Annual Central Pennsylvania Pride Festival is a celebration of culture and diversity," announce the organizers. "Its goal: find creative ways to demonstrate support for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered community.... Reflecting the theme of diversity, Pride Fest features a broad sampling of ethnic and local foods (no alcohol allowed)," the declaration continues. "Wristbands issued at the gate must be worn at all times. Children must be accompanied by an adult, and all pets must be leashed."

And herein lies the most remarkable story of all­ about how an idea unleashed in New York a little more than a generation ago has run rampant 'round the world, so that in this season of pride, the descendants of Mongol invaders in Hungary, the children of the first humans on the African savannas (all right, mostly the Euro-colonized parts), and the never-conquered Thais all make ready to parade. In an earlier age, globetrotters marveled at the conquests of Alexander the Great, the vast reach of Roman roads and aqueducts, and the intercontinental scatter of Christian churches. At the turn of this millennium, there is the ubiquity of the gay pride parade.

It's one of the paradoxes of information theory that the most truly diverse data stream­ one purely random­ seems to an observer as homogenous white noise or an undifferentiated screen of salt-and-pepper gray. So is the global wave of gay pride­ to pick a more biological metaphor­ like an algae bloom, choking out truly diverse forms of homoerotic life that used to flourish locally in ponds and puddles around the world­ in Thailand's Buddhist temples, Genghis Khan's tents, and in Bantu huts? Or is it a benign and pleasant greenery, bringing color, life, and circuit party to places where before was the only the silent dust and dark of the closet?

A latter-day Darwin would not answer the question by web-surfing or navel-gazing but would sally forth­ come burn, bug, or bowel distress­ and check it out for himself. See you at the parade!
