HIV viral load in semen is highest -- and HIV-positive men are therefore most contagious -- three to four weeks after they've been infected, according to researchers from the U.S. and Malawi. The researchers also note that viral load climbs again in semen when a
man's CD4 count drops to very low levels. The research confirms earlier studies finding that people with very early- and very late-stage HIV are driving the HIV epidemic.
