Crumb retrospective awash in lascivious ink
New York-- R. Crumb is not a gay cartoonist. But in a way he should have been. His work expressed (well, expresses-- he's thankfully still with us) a keen sense of male sexual angst as
it hits up against womenly (and girly-- Crumb is wondrously politically incorrect) erotic reserve. Had Crumb been gay, he would have found life a lot easier-- guys are quicker to scratch
each others' itches. But then we wouldn't have all those great cartoons. One of the original underground "Comix" artists, R. Crumb is the subject of the 1994 documentary,
Crumb by Terry Zwigoff. Last year Crumb was included in "The Best in Season," an exhibition at the Aldrich Museum, Ridgefield, Connecticut, and Eye Infection at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam.
Coming up in spring 2004, Crumb will have a solo exhibition at the Ludwig Museum, Cologne. But for the time being-- until November 9th, anyway-- Take in Crumb's
oeuvre at the Paul Morris Gallery (465 West 23rd Street) in a show that includes 30 ink-on-paper drawings from 1976 to the present. The gallery is open 10am to 6pm. For more info call 212-727-2752 or e-mail
