HIV-infected men receiving protease inhibitors have an excess prevalence of osteopenia and osteoporosis, according to new research from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. The study of 112
men, including 60 who were HIV-positive and receiving antiretrovirals, showed that those taking the therapy had a relative risk of 2.19 for osteoporosis. The bone mineral loss is considered an independent side effect of the
AIDS therapy.
