Even the squeal
By Blanche Poubelle

Blanche's curious new friend Jessica was browsing profiles at a prominent gay men's online site, and was intrigued that many of the men said that they were into pig play. "What's that?" Jessica wanted to know. While Miss Poubelle thought that she had an intuitive idea of what pig play or pig sex is, a bit of internet searching revealed considerable variation in how gay men use or think about the term.

Take this definition (from Gaydemon.com/dicktionary/pig_sex ):

View our poll archive
Gay pig sex usually refers to sex involving unprotected sex or sex that is "wetter" than ordinary sex. Men who find playing with cum of one or multiple partners, barebacking or drinking or rubbing cum on their faces or skin, would be considered "pigs." Some people also consider men who enjoy activities like being spat on or fisted to be into gay pig sex. A gay sex pig is someone who enjoys sex with less limits.

The accounting seemed only partially correct to Blanche, so she dug further, with suggestions from her friend Matt. Blanche looked at a variety of sites that market themselves as pig-oriented, trying to figure out what people mean when they say pig play.

Pigsmen.com is one such site. Members can post profiles and pictures, and also sign up for particular groups, with special photo sets. So the number of members in a group is a rough index of how important these activities are to the sexuality of men who choose to become members.

The most popular groups there (in declining order) are piss, dirty, bareback, and fisting. Dirty seems to be a variety of things including dirty jockstraps, socks, and dick cheese. Also represented -- but not very popular -- seem to be feet, shit and skinheads. It was interesting to see that more SM-oriented topics such as bondage, rubber and spanking were not represented among the groups.

Blanche also had a look at the videos listed at Dickwadd.com , which specializes in pig-play fetish video. Their film Pigs at the Troff is iconic pig porn, and the description says that it is "filled with lightning-paced piss, cum, power fucking, rimming and fisting action." Another video, Pigs in Heat, is described as "rutting raw, sucking ass, double fucking, eating cum, slamming huge cocks down hungry throats, taking loads, felching 'em back, shouting and playing watersports games."

Delightedly unclean

Nearly all the descriptions of pig porno include rimming and cum, and Blanche thinks that they are probably part of the core concept of pig play, even though they don't show up as separate groups on the pigsmen site. However, some pig-play videos mention barebacking and fistfucking, while others do not. The pigsmen site profiles also show that pig guys differ significantly in their preferences about safe sex and fistfucking. That makes Blanche think that these two things are sometimes a part of pig play, but are not necessarily included in the category.

So the survey seems to show that the sexual activities most centrally associated with pig play are piss, cum, rimming, fucking, and being "dirty" in various ways. What do all these things have in common that connects them as a single fetish category?

Blanche's best guess is that they all involve being aroused by violating some taboo about what is clean and what is dirty. Cultures around the world have different ideas of what is dirty, but things that come out of the body -- such as semen, urine, feces, saliva and sweat -- are a near-universal taboo. As kids we are told to stay away from all these dirty things, but as kinky grown-ups, some guys get off on contact with them. And just to make it more complicated, many guys like sweat and piss, but very few like shit or smegma. So individual pigs get off on some dirty things, but not others.

Pig play is a reasonable description of sex where getting dirty is a key part of the enjoyment, given the popular association of pigs with filth. But Blanche's friend Jessica raises an interesting objection to the term, which is that pig play describes such a wide range of activities that it is not very useful. So if a guy says he is into pig play, what exactly does that mean? Some guys seem to include fisting and barebacking, while others do not.

This objection seems well-taken. Given the evidence of some substantial variation in usage, it would probably be safest for guys who want to do dirty stuff to actually list what they like, or to give more information -- such as "safe pig play" or "pig play, but no fisting." The consequences of mis-communication seem especially high in pig play. If you get it wrong, you may end up with a mouth or ass full of something you don't want. So Blanche suggests that before you hook up with someone who likes it nasty that you make sure you know what kind of nasty they like.
