AIDS researchers in Spain have found that a combination of high-dose saquinavir plus ritonavir has long-term efficacy in more than half of the HIV-positive
patients who have not responded well to past protease inhibitor therapy. The study, which spanned 12 months, consisted of twice daily antiviral therapy, with a total of
58 patients participating. The researchers found that the dual regimen has significant long-term antiviral efficacy. Suppression of HIV-1 RNA was more likely in
patients starting treatment with HIV-1 RNA levels below 5,000 copies/mL.
