Topping It Off is set entirely in A Taste of Leather, the San Francisco leather emporium and sex club, and amounts to an extended commercial for its goods and services. In each of the four sex scenes, performers model examples of the playwear A Taste of Leather offers for sale, and show some of the merchandise in action. Serious kink aficionados might prefer to look at a catalogue.

In the first episode, while a store clerk goes off in search of a Roman gladiator kilt in Anthony Gallo's size, customers Anthony Ericson and Gallo get it on near the sales counter. This begins promisingly ("Chew on that foreskin!"), but lapses into stasis. In the second and best sequence, Corky Adams is accosted among the clothing racks by a hooded Drew Andrews who asks him matter-of-factly, "Would you like to learn to be a puppy?" Outfitted with leather paw-like "puppy mitts," Adams is taught by no-nonsense obedience trainer Andrews to sit, beg, roll over, suck his master's cock, get fucked doggy-style, and say "Ruff!" The third segment is a slurpy encounter between Andrew Christian and Bill Marlowe on flattened cardboard boxes in the plant-festooned atrium of the sex club. The video, marred throughout by wobbly camerawork and a clunky soundtrack, ends with a disappointing three-way featuring Chris Anthony, Andrews, and Adams (in a sling).

Director R. (for Rumpel?) Stilskin, one of a handful of women involved in the production of gay porn, is a controversial figure within the industry. In his memoir Autopornography, Scott O'Hara, who appeared in at least three of her early videos, calls her "the devil incarnate" and makes barbed remarks about her competence. Presumably, she has learned a lot since she last worked with O'Hara in the '80s, but if Topping It Off is any indication, her apprenticeship is not over.
