Boston-- "We have tribal markings that distinguish us from the rest of the world," declares Davin. "We have rituals that are practiced by members of our tribe. Throughout the world our tribe can be identified. Throughout the
world we grow like weeds under the white fences of suburban culture." Are we talking gay people here, the wearing of an earring, the lyp-syncing to the
Rocky Horror Picture Show? No, the subject is punk rockers. You've
enjoyed, perhaps, their music. You've dropped quarters, maybe, into their begging bowls on Santa Monica Boulevard or East 8th Street. But have you ever seen a punk rocker in the buff?
In the State of Nature, "a diy punk erotica
zine," is dedicated to showing just that-- not exactly for your voyeuristic delectation, thank you very much, but in the service of cultivating a home-grown punk and hardcore (as in the music) eroticism.
"We still, despite the obvious contradictions, watch mainstream pornography," explains editor Davin, mounting the soapbox. "We accept their standards of what sexuality is, what positions to use, what noises to make,
what garments to wear. The people that we see in their movies are not our people. The wimmin are painted and full of silicon. The men are washboard-abs and giant dicks. In these movies the pressures of consumer culture
are magnified.... These movies are everything we hate about the world that we live in. When did us punks start falling for that old bullshit?"
A handsome preview of In the State of
Nature appears unnaturally on your monitor's phosphors at www.angelfire.com/on2/maineADL/beautiful.html. But the finished work itself, printed with soy-inks upon "tree-free
paper" (think hemp), won't be published until the spring. Are you a card-carrying punkster? If you're in Boston or Maine, you can arrange for a photo shoot, if you're prepared to pose in the all-in-all. Would-be contributors from
elsewhere can post some photos of themselves-- nude or nearly so-- but "Please, no joke shots. No pink bunny ears, no goggles, no diapers"-- along with "your top-five playlist and whatever you would like your name to be printed as."
