Pridefest America 2002 stirs up homosexual Philly
Philadelphia On September 11th at the World Trade Center, one could quip, East met West. Ironically, "East Meets West" is the title of the series, by Tseng Kwong Chi, from which this photo is taken. Starting in the
late 70s, Tseng, who grew up in Vancouver, dressed up in a Mao suit and photographed himself as if he were a tourist from the People's Republic plunked down in various sometimes improbable locations. Tseng was
a contemporary and pal to various denizens of New York's queer and spunky late-70s art scene Keith Haring, Andy Warhol, Bill T. Jones, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and John Sex counted among Tseng's friends and
collaborators. Tseng died of AIDS in 1990 at age 39. Gone but not forgotten however neither remembered too well. A perfect fit: the folks at Pridefest America 2002, a homosexual
kultur extravaganza, wanted to "present the works of
an important artist whose contributions have never before been exhibited retrospectively." So up until May 5, 2002, check out Tseng's
oeuvre at the Philadelphia Art Alliance (251 South 18th Street; 215-545-4302),
in conjunction with the many other events that are part of PrideFest, which runs April 29 to May 5. For more info, on all the happenings, check out www.pridefestamerica.com and www.philartalliance.org.
