New York-- You mean there were gay people before 1969? Before Stonewall? So claims Dr. Charles Silverstein, and he is preparing an anthology to prove it. Not only did gay people exist in prehistory, contends the
co-auteur of the Joy of Gay Sex, but, bereft though they were of partner benefits and hate crimes laws, some of these antediluvian homosexuals nevertheless lived meaningful, happy lives. That's the bright facet of
pre-Stonewall life Silverstein hopes to polish, with an upbeat book titled
What A Time We Had. The volume "will document the fact that even in an oppressive society, many gay people functioned well and had fun within the gay circles
they traveled in," Silverstein says. "Some can tell funny stories about eluding the police, stories about sexual scenes, living-- openly or not-- with lovers, domestic issues, and relationships to their families."
