Washington, DC-- The US prison population keeps growing by leaps and bounds, and sex trails only drugs as a reason for locking people up. As a homosexual outlaw, chances are you know somebody
on the inside. CURE is among the few groups confronting prisoners' plight and the mania for jailing-- men, mostly-- for victimless crimes. Citizens United for Rehabilitation of Errants fights the death penalty and
monitors legislation that keeps prisoners from getting education, as well as laws that put youngsters in adult jails (see photo). A subsection of CURE focuses on people locked up for sex.
Cure's work is recognized-- three US senators and 20 Congresspeople list themselves on the group's masthead. But mostly CURE's work is done by activists who know first-hand what American prisons are like. Prisoners can join for $5; outsiders for $10 a year.
Write CURE, PO Box 2310, Washington, DC 20013-2310, or call 202-789-2126.
