Arrest wipes load off librarians' minds
Librarians in Dayton, Ohio, and volunteers at the local gay and lesbian community center are breathing easier these days. After three years of eluding authorities, the man who police believe is the "Mad Shitter" has been
taken into custody, and was charged on May 22 with five counts of "criminal damaging."
The police believe Carl Lenhof is the person responsible for more than a dozen incidents in Montgomery County libraries in which a man, who calls himself "the Mad Shitter" "defecates on books and
leaves 'hate' notes," as the Dayton Daily
News described it. The volumes selected tended to be on two themes, according to the newspaper, "homosexual education guides and books about the United Nations."
In addition, the "mad shitter" struck the Dayton gay community center, with what officials there say were weekly harassment calls, and a mailed pair of soiled underwear.
In Dayton libraries, "Soiled books were left in the men's toilet, in the book return area, or on a shelf," the
Daily News noted. Among the titles damaged-- or enhanced, depending on your scatological and
literary tastes-- were Zack's Story, about growing up with homosexual parents, and
Search for Peace: The Story of the United
Nations.
The cost to libraries of the vandalism, which began in early 1995, was between 500 and 1000 dollars.
