Lyon is characterized by the intelligence and seriousness often associated with the second born. It's approximately two hours by TGV (the amazing trains which travel at
tres grande vitesse) from Paris. Most of Lyon's gay scene is found in Vieux Lyon, on the presqu'isle
bounded by Le Rhône and La Saône, and almost all gay points of interest are within an easy ten-minute walk of each other.
Le 10 (10, rue Mulet) is elegant to the point of being a bit snobbish: the owner there couldn't get past
The Guide's newsprint interior ("C'est tous que
je deteste!" he exclaimed when we met.) By contrast
Le Cap Opera (2, Place Louis Pradel), just behind Lyon's opera house, swings. Open from 4pm, this bar fills with a youngish crowd and other sophisticated types from
l'heure de cocktail on.
La Ruche (22, rue Gentil) is easily Lyon's busiest, and the fun crowd has an international flavor. It's operated by Christophe, a former Paris barman.
L'Etoile Opera, (26, rue de l'Arbre Sec) is a cocktail bar and restaurant serving a mixed clientele. The light lunch I had here was delicious.
The busy Le Forum Bar (15, rue des Quatres Chapeaux) is Lyon's classic men's bar. The guys here were relaxed and conversational.
Le Lax Bar (2, rue Coysevox) is a very cool place situated in one of the oldest parts of the city, just behind the Place des Terreaux. The young, dynamic Kary animates this friendly place.
M.Z. Le Bar (3, Place St-Paul) is just across La Saône from the presqu'isle, about seven minutes by foot from the central Place des Terreaux. It's a small neighborhood bar with an active calendar and an upstairs for weekend overflow.
Barman Filip is a native Lyonais, and he knows the scene like the back of his hand.
Le Motor Men Bar (2, rue Bellecordiere) is Lyon's main back room bar. It has a secured front entrance and a large downstairs.
Pub Disco Le Marais (14, rue Thomassin) is Lyon's main women's club, where men are always welcome!
As for the city's night clubs, La Chapelle (60, Montee de Choulans; lachapelle@wanadoo.fr) is a converted chateau perched high above the city with commanding views and protected inner gardens. It's open weekends during the winter, and throughout the week
during the summer. The crowd is mixed.
There's a mixed crowd at Le DV1, too (22, Rue Royale), in Vieux Lyon.
Le Medley Club (19, Rue Childebert) near La Place de la Republique) is a small downstairs club open Tuesday through Saturday, from 9pm on. The staff are friendly, and owner, Gilles, encourages out-of-towners to pay a visit.
Pinks Club (38, rue de l'Arbre Sec) was just starting up at my recent visit.
United Cafe, Le (Impasse de la Pecherie), or
L'UC as it was referred to in Lyon, was
the club in town. It draws Lyons young, cool crowd.
The several sex clubs in Lyon included Le 1er Sous-Sol (7, rue Puits Gaillot), La Jungle (1, rue de Thou), and Le Trou (6, rue Romarin).
I ran across four saunas there. These included
Le Double side (8, rue Constantine, Le Mandala (9, rue Boissac), L'Oasis Club (2, rue Coustou), and
Le Sauna Bellecour (4, rue Simon Maupin). They all seemed to serve a primarily local trade.
Le Major Videostore (2, Place des Capucins) sells and rents DVDs, and stocks gadgets, lubes, toys, etcetera. It's gay Lyon's main sex shop.
Amongst the restaurants Les Feuillants (5, rue des Feuillants) came highly recommended and I was happy to have had the occasion to dine there. The food was fantastic. The restaurant is open at midday and at dinner-time. Two other restaurant references I
have include L'Ultime (23, rue Royale) and
Le Yucatan (20, rue Royale).
I was very happy with my accommodations at the charming
Hotel Le patio des Terreaux (9, rue Sainte Catherine; 04.78.28.11.01), where the heat worked just fine during one of the coldest weeks in Lyon in 30 years! Hosts
Jean-Francois and Jean-Christophe are redoing this historic building whose history includes a period when it housed silk-making
ateliers, when Lyon was a world leader in the production of silk. Now these comfortable rooms come with private bath, and some of the sexiest TV
you'll find anywhere in the world, after 1am.
The Hotel Iris (36, rue de l'Arbre Sec; 04.78.39.93.80), like the Hotel le Patio des Terreaux, serves a mixed clientele.
