Downtown-- home to many of the Queen City's (would you believe?) gay bars and clubs-- or around the University area on the Ludlow Avenue Strip, and along Hamilton Street in the North Side, you'll feel right at home. A
recently published thick four color glossy book advertising over 200 local businesses to the gays and lesbians of Cincinnati evinces the changes taking place even here in a city that the rest of Ohio views as more Southern
than Midwestern.
Pyramids (907 Race) is Cincy's scrappy local gay bookstore. Featuring the best in gay erotica, leather paraphernalia, and sex toys, Pyramids has withstood the legal onslaughts of the Religious Right and survived.
GLBT News-- the area gay paper, available here-- has listings online.
Popular with gay visitors to Cincinnati, the
Millenium Hotel (150 W. 5th; 866-866-8086) has downtown convenience and reasonable rates.
Bars and restaurants
Beneath the high bridges spanning the river, just west of the stadium,
Dock (603 Pete Rose Way W.) is a local legend dance club with high-energy music and throbbing lights, now open to 18-plus too. A more
relaxed and brighter video bar is at the front. There's Wednesday Club DC Hip-Hop; Thursday Darkotica, with gothic and alternative music from DJ Mark Burney; and afterhours Fridays and Saturdays until 4am. Sunday shows
and pageants, hunky strippers on Tuesdays, and Friday night drag shows fill out the week.
Adonis (4601 Kellogg), mobbed on weekend nights, is the big new 16,000-square-foot dance club alongside the Ohio River. This multi-entertainment complex has five distinct areas: dance club, video bar, jazz bar,
cabaret room, and outdoor deck (with a pool) overlooking the river. The lounges feature blazing fireplaces, and there's plenty of parking in their lots to accommodate the folks streaming in from all over Ohio, Kentucky, and
Indiana. There's Wednesday karaoke, and weekly drag events in the Cabaret room include: Divas on Thursdays, Toulouse Fleausaise Fridays, and Saturday Night Diva. Special events include the recent Valentines Party and Mardi
Gras Masked Ball.
Union Station Video Cafe (825 Main) opens daily with full restaurant service. They feature happy hour from 4 to 8pm weekdays, free internet wi-fi access, Karaoke Wednesdays, hit videos and Showtunes Sundays, plus
early-bird specials and two-for-one dinners from 5-8pm on weekends.
Universal Grill (909 Vine Street) is a place where anyone can eat, drink, and be themselves! Generally a bit boisterous, always fun and friendly, the restaurant serves great burgers, pizzas, and salads by day and
adds some more upscale entree offerings in the evenings. The sleek, contemporary bar, made of under-lit onyx, has entertainment most nights and great video all the time! Awarded Best Gay Bar by AOL in 2006, the place
attracts a diverse crowd where all kinds of people feel welcome. The restaurant opens weekdays at 11am, Saturdays and Sundays at 4pm, and closes 11pm Sunday through Wednesday and midnight on Thursdays, Fridays, and
Saturdays. The bar opens with the restaurant and closes at 2:30am every night.
On Broadway (817 Broadway), Cincinnati's downtown hotspot, is a cozy neighborhood hideaway. The crowd is as diverse as our community is. Remember when gays and lesbians, queens, twinks and leather boys all
used to hang out together? It's still like that here. Add live music (no cover) from their singers and songwriters series, barbecues on their patio, and you've got one hell of a good time. This is also the home of the Broadway
Monkeys, the local gay softball team.
Other establishments include:
Bullfishes (4023 Hamilton); Golden Lions (340 Ludlow); Club Bronze (4029 Hamilton);
Little Bit (2401 Vine); Shooters (927 Race), for country-western fans;
Serpent (4042 Hamilton), a Northside leather bar;
Simon Says (428 Walnut); and Subway (609 Walnut).
Esquire Theatre (320 Ludlow), with current art-house movies, is located amid a cluster of interesting shops, restaurants, and cafes.
Old Street Saloon (Old Street, Monroe) is a "Cheers for Queers" on the way to Dayton.
Over the river in Kentucky, there's Rosie's Tavern (643 Bakewell) and Yadda Club (404 Pike) in Covington, and the
Crazy Fox (901 Washington) in Newport.
Other helpful gay Ohio sites include: Out In Ohio and Gay People's Chronicle.
