It was 1955 when Rodgers and Hammerstein's musical
Oklahoma won an Academy Award. Forty-nine years later, Oklahoma is still soaring-- not with melodies and songs, but with men!
Accommodations
Nowhere in the Midwest will you find a place like the
Habana Inn (2200 NW 39th Expressway;405-528-2221). The Habana Inn definitely lives up to its slogan stating
that they are "The Southwest's only resort hotel of its kind." With over 175 hotel rooms, two swimming pools (maintained by a full-time landscaper), three bars, and a restaurant, you may
never have to leave. And the cruising never stops. Most rooms feature a glass front with curtains that close only when privacy is needed. A continuous balcony hugs each of the two floors.
Don't plan on going to the Habana and getting some shut eye! This complex is adjacent to the gay district where many more bars are located.
Yet another facility in Oklahoma City, Hollywood Hotel and
Suites (3535 NW 39th Expressway; 405-947-2351) is self-professedly "the South's premier gay and lesbian
resort" with 200 rooms, eight suites, and a pool. A restaurant and a bar can also be found within the complex.
Bars
The Habana Inn features three of the most popular bars in Oklahoma City.
The Copa a large, state-of-the-art dance club that sports a spacious dance floor and an ample
stage surrounded by tables and open space on two levels. Their crowd represents a cross section of Oklahoma City's gay and lesbian community. Weekly events include underwear contests,
drag acts that feature the hilarious Ginger Lamar, and male dancers. At
Finishline the country-western dance club, pool tables are well cued, and the large dance floor is the site for
spirited country dancing. The club gets real busy on weekend nights, but draws a good crowd during the week.
Ledo Cabaret and Lounge, a martini bar, is good for piano
entertainment, especially on weekends.
Other bars include, Tramps (2201 NW 39th),
The Park (2125 NW 39th), Wreck Room (2127 NW 39th), and
Angles (2117 NW 39th). Nearby clubs include:
Hi Lo Club (1221 NW 50th), Levi's (2807 NW 36th), and
Secrets (300 SE 59th). Club Rox (3535 NW 39th Street), within Hollywood Hotel, is also a worthy stop whilst bar hopping.
Restaurants
Nik's (2200 NW 39th Expressway) located in the Habana Inn, features breakfast, lunch, dinner as well as late-night meals and pizza. All meals are creative and there are daily
specials from soup-and-sandwich to pastas or a Mexican dish. One of the two swimming pools is right outside offering quite a view while waiting for your meal. Be sure to try their prime rib
special on weekends.
Topanga Grill and Bar (3535 NW 39th Street) located within Hollywood Hotel and Suites, features Southwest cuisine at its best.
Toys, videos, and more
Also in the Habana Inn is Jungle Red. Known for their large selection of 2Xist under gear, they also have leather goods, body jewelry, pride merchandise, adult novelties,
lube, magazines, videos, as well as gifts and cards. They have afternoon and late-night evening hours to cater to the bar crowd.
Not far from the gay district are two Christie's Toy Box (3126 N May and 1039 Meridian) locations. Christie's specializes in leather goods, shoes, lingerie, and fetish wear.
They also sell and rent videos, and offer toys, pride wear, and magazines.

by The Gayly Oklahoman, a statewide newspaper that rolls off the press once every two weeks.
