When Dawn was eight years old, Dawn's family moved across the country. In an effort to compensate for the trauma of leaving behind playmates and a familiar school, the parents offered Dawn the right to choose the paint color for Dawn's new bedroom. When the choice of
lavender was announced, though, Dawn's otherwise indulgent father vetoed the decision-- Dawn's first memory of parentally enforced gender construction.
Thus, Dawn was pleased to read that marketing gurus have announced that pink is now a "hot" color for young boys. This seeming advance in gender freedom, though, was tempered by news that J.C. Penney is vending a t-shirt touting "Tough Guys Wear Pink," an
apparent attempt to legitimize the hue with macho bravado. Dawn simply prefers to think that sissy boys are "tough guys"....
