Dawn Ivory
Dawn was amused to read propaganda from the oxymoronically-named "Marriage Equality," a New York group agitating to include homos in the institution of
marriage. In it, we learn that marriage is a "basic human right," a bit of a rhetorical overreach in Dawn's mind. Marriage is a state-sanctioned contract; as such, it is as much
a "human right" as are auto loans and fork-lift licenses. And given that the religious/state role in propagating marriage benefits is rooted in regulating sexuality, it
seems odd for an ostensibly queer group to lobby for the adultery and fornication punishments that are marriage's flip-side. (And, of course, "gay marriage" means
"gay divorce," perhaps explaining why so many of the most vocal proponents of homo weddings seem to be lawyers looking for work....) In any case, Dawn suspects
that Marriage Equality is confusing the right to fuck with marriage; they, of course, are not the first to so err.
Marriage Equality doesn't feel the need to explain why single people should subsidize those legally coupled (homo or hetero), nor do they attempt to explain
why marriage should be limited to couples and not extended to trios and larger groups desirous of "taking a lifelong [well,
maybe...] step to building a stable and
loving family." They also skip over how the government intrudes into the lives of married couples seeking immigration benefits; right now, even hetero married couples
seeking citizenship for one partner are subjected to grilling by the immigration Gestapo about their sex lives. Who in their right mind wants that "equality" for gay folk?
