How to order
In Passions of War, Chapter 1: Honor, the opening salvo of another military-themed Eastern European series, passions generally run lukewarm, war seems a distant concern, and honor is never an issue. The backdrop is
supposed to be a barren outpost like the sun-baked seaside encampment in Claire Denis's
Beau travail, but the actual location might well be the Adriatic littoral, dotted with tourist hotspots (and the sites of military hotspots back in
the early '90s). Various abandoned buildings represent a base where recruits are drilled, slapped around, punched in the gut, and quasi-raped by their superiors. As the cast of one dozen muscular, uncircumcised European
hunks conducts its business, English subtitles translate such nuggets of speech as, "Spit on it, you nasty pervert!" The direction is credited to "Eugene," perhaps an alias of stupefyingly prolific Csaba Borbly.
There are five mechanical rounds of one-on-one sex between models who could have been cloned from the same strand of DNA. (It doesn't help that everyone wears identical combat fatigues.) During a lull halfway
through, bored soldiers at separate sentry positions jerk off. As the sun beats down on the blue, blue sea and the gray, brown rocks, men start going oop-shoobie. Sergeant Jonathan (Rick Perry) gets up on an airplane-hangar
catwalk with a gun and screams, "It gets under your skin and eats up your body! You can feel it eating you!" Taking charge, Miguel Sabroso approaches the sergeant, disarms him, and initiates sex. That's the high point.
