A rare bit of humility
By Dawn Ivory

View our poll archive
Dawn has been struck by a certain style of jingoism evident in the US regarding thetragiceventsofseptembereleventh. Anyone suggesting that searching for the root causes, the history, behind the mass murders might be wise, subjects himself to rabid criticism as a traitor-- any attempt to analyze is taken as an endorsement of terrorism. "Don't think, just get even" is the message from the White House on down. That's why the remarks of Canada's outgoing prime minister Jean Chretien struck Dawn as noteworthy. (Maybe only outgoing folks are allowed to speak the truth....) Said Mr. Chretien, "You know, you cannot exercise your powers to the point of humiliation for others. That is what the Western world-- not only the Americans, the Western world-- has to realize. Because they [the have nots] are human beings, too. There are long-term consequences if you don't look hard at the reality in 10 or 20 or 30 years from now.... The Western world is getting too rich in relation to the poor world and necessarily, you know, we're looked upon as being arrogant, self-satisfied, greedy, and with no limits. And September 11th is an occasion for me to realize it even more."

No doubt, Präsident Bush and Field Marshall Ashcroft will be instructing the State Department not to allow Mr. Chretien travel privileges to the US....
