Plans by the Human Rites Fund® and the Metropolitan Homo Churches to gather in Washington, DC, in
2000 have elicited some criticism and well as confusion. Among the critics, activist Carmen Vasquez has derided
the proposed confab for being organized from the top down (as an Al Gore pep rally?) with a blinkered
vision ("fags and dykes are fine; immigrants and other undesirables can organize their own march, thank you
very much"). (And for her comments, the HRF's Liz Birch tagged Vasquez a "maggot," an intemperate remark
that surely signals Liz is on her way out....)
Taking no sides, Dawn confesses, however, to being confused. Calling the undertaking the
"Millennium Picnic" (a take-off on the grandiose moniker "Millennium March" being hyped by promoters) is satire of
that, Dawn is sure. But when Dawn laughed heartily upon hearing that the rally was for "Faith and Family"
(presuming such a reactionary agenda to be more satire), Dawn was upbraided, told that that is the
real subtitle for the festivities.
Oh dear. In their grab for alliterative appeal, Millennium marchers have fallen a little short: "Faith and
Family" is one "F" shy of the original
Kinder, Kirche, Kuche....
