Dawn receives many clips every month that detail case after case of men being sent to prison for years because they were sexually affectionate with willing and eager youth. Typical is a small article in a recent Chicago Tribune reporting that Scott Schroeder, 21, faces a mandatory 10-year prison term if convicted of charges that he made porno images of a "minor" (15? 16? 17?) that "could be" transmitted by computer. (Can't any image, appropriately manipulated, be "transmitted by computer"? Is this charge just a way to exploit rashly-passed Draconian "kiddie computer porn" laws?) Scott was given no chance at bail since, in a statement to the FBI(!), he admitted(!) to having sex with a fifteen-year-old boy the previous year. (Sex which the law tells us, contrary to common sense and reality, is always rape.)

Now, Dawn doesn't know all the facts in this particular case, but can easily imagine that they're sadly like so many others: Scott and pal(s) having the fun that any high-spirited and ever-horny youth might desire, some social-worker/parent-type getting wind of this criminal activity, Scott's nervous paramour(s), eager to prove that they're no fag(s) cooperate with the sex Gestapo, and Scott's young life is wrecked by a long stretch in prison where he'll likely suffer enormous abuse. Nobody was complaining nor being harmed until the police got involved.

Gay people should recognize that a sexual police state and true gay liberation are mutually exclusive. But, despicably, the Human Rights Fund, NGLTF, and virtually all local and national queer political groups actively court cozy relations with the cops in pathetic efforts to prove their respectability. It's almost enough for Dawn to desire fate to take a few more nasty turns so as to be able to wave to all those approval-seekers as they're loaded onto the camp-bound boxcars. (But, of course, Dawn might be lucky to still be around as part of the camp welcoming committee....)
